Nothing kills productivity quite like poor time management and procrastination.
Whether you’re a business owner, employee, student or parent with a busy schedule, I’m sure you know the feeling of an infinite to-do list with a very finite amount of time.
In fact, we recently surveyed our entire database of clients, and one of their biggest issues was time management and productivity.
Get ready for all your excuses and bullsh*t to be thrown away because I’m going to show you exactly how I set goals, structure my day, and stay focused when sh*t hits the fan.
Setting reasonable goals
In order to manage your time effectively, you need to know exactly what needs doing and when.
I’m a big fan of setting clear goals every day and week and reviewing them regularly so I can stay on top of things.
You might have heard of SMART goals, an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
It’s a great little tip to keep in mind when you’re setting goals realistic and effective.
None of this bullsh*t easy stuff like “check email, change the font size.”
You want clear goals, a deadline, and some way of knowing when it’s completed/the outcome is achieved.
Managing your energy
If you find yourself taking a bunch of little breaks or switching between tasks “just to mix it up,” I have one word for you.
Multi-tasking is just a sophisticated method of procrastination. Your best shot at getting sh*t done is to focus on a task, get it done, then take a breather after a reasonable amount of time.
We use the 90/10 rule to maintain strong focus and keep my energy high when dealing with big projects.
Work for 90 minutes straight. No breaks, no swapping between tasks, no distractions.
Then, take a 10-minute break. Fill up your water bottle, walk around the block, stretch, meditate, anything good for the mind and body.
Try not to hop on your phone or social media, otherwise you’re just going to fall down a little online rabbit hole and not be able to focus again properly.
I find this method works really well for me, my coworkers, and the people I recommend it to. It allows you to get into the flow, really sink your teeth into a task, and keep your mind and body from burning out.
As I like to say, we can’t add more hours to the day, but we can manage our energy so the hours we do have are more effective.
The key to staying focused
When you’re dealing with an incredibly dull, time-consuming but necessary task, it can be hard to get the motivation to tackle it head on.

Boring 100-page contract to look over? Think of all the ways this will protect your business, which provides for your family.
Struggling to find the motivation to squeeze in a workout? Well, the exercise will improve your physical health, which will give you more energy, and boost your mood!
Finding these links and this cause-effect is how you hack your psychology to create motivation and enthusiasm for even the most unappealing tasks.
