I am so grateful for my son. I’m so grateful to that kid for so many reasons, for so many things.
Get your sh** in order.
Get your sh** in order because when I found out my ex-wife was pregnant I literally started doing overtime and burning midnight oils. I started doing everything I could because I wanted to set my life up so I could be a dad and an entrepreneur.
See I’m not one of these guys that wants to set things up so I can have someone take my kid to school, have someone pick up my kid from school, and if I’m lucky maybe see them on the weekends or on holidays. No, no, no…
When I have my son I want to take him to school in the morning. I want to be coming home at a reasonable hour. I want to be playing with him for two or three hours in the evening, having dinner with him and having conversations with him, spending weekends with him – going to swimming lessons, and going to Jiu Jitsu with him.
So when I found out that my ex-wife was pregnant, I actually went into overtime to set the business up to be streamlined so that I could be focussing predominantly on the things that made me most productive (in the business).
Now for me, being separated it makes things a little bit difficult but that stuff is really important to me, so it’s a high priority.
Having a child made me so productive. It really made me focus on what was important and what was just noise.
Get your house in order now
The best piece of advice I can give you is… get your house in order now. You’ve got nine months to get your sh*t together and streamline your levels of productivity and efficiency at work.
One of the things I’m really grateful for, is now I can do like four days worth of work in one day now, having him taught me how to be productive. Really tap into that opportunity and don’t waste it.
It’s all based on values, right? If being a dad and being a good father is a genuine value for you, you will do whatever it takes to make sure you have the time available for your child.
Ok, which means – you will set the business up, you’ll prioritise, you’ll plan, you’ll do everything like a mother – but if that’s not your genuine value then you won’t. The proof will be in the pudding.
If there’s one piece of advice that I’ll really lean on here, it’s, get your house in order.
Get your house in order and get ready because the first six weeks you’re going to want to be there as much as possible.
And then, for the first…forever, you’re going to want to be as present as possible.
And that means having a level of balance – that will never exist in complete perfection because that is life with very young children. But, a level of balance can exist and be supported by your ability to be productive and focus at work on the things that give you maximum return for your time.
It’s all about time.
I’ve got a great video on YouTube, ‘How do kids spell love. T-I-M-E.’
You can watch it here.
